There is this rule among
teachers that we should look out for one another. Even the
administration in schools across the country, are commissioned to protect their teaching
staff as well. However, when there is no balance to that, you find some
educators defending and enabling wrong behaviors. Now we know that some of our
children are not perfect at and are prone to some level of bad behavior, but it
does not give us the right as educators to mistreat them just because we are
having a bad day and they're getting on our nerves. If that is the case them we
need to take a well day or figure out a different route. We even must be
willing to keep each other accountable and not turn our head when we see
something happen. It is so easy to say that I have to protect my colleague or
staff because Billy has a history of starting trouble but that is never an
excuse to fall into self-preservation mode. When correcting a student, it
should never be done with our level of comfort in mind. I’m writing Mary up because
she got on my bad side. NO! Correction should only be use for the purpose
getting a student back to the purpose for which they come to school in the first
place, which is to learn. Protecting each other in an unhealthy way shows a lack of
integrity on our part and violates the purpose of why we teach. The thing is, you must think about how you would want your child, niece, nephew,
grandchild, or sibling treated.
